Weekend Wrap-up...

We made a quick trip to Dallas this weekend, to celebrate our niece, Emma's, 2nd birthday.

The weekend was jam-packed with family time, but we did manage to squeeze in a SOLO date night thanks to Grammy and Grandpa's advanced baby-sitting skills :) It's so nice to spend one on one time with this handsome guy...
Aunt Paige and Emma, the birthday girl, chillin' at Peter Piper Pizza...AWESOME.
Jon beat me in Skee Ball. I demand a rematch. I hate losing!!!!
After the festivities in D-town, we jetted back to Austin to watch to the Super Bowl with friends.

Jon won his Fantasy Football League (one of the three he participated in this year), and ceremoniously received his prize money during the Super Bowl party on Sunday. Caroline is basking in her Daddy's victory...
See??? All those Sundays when Daddy neglected Caroline and I finally paid off!! ;)
(sorry for the blurry pic)

We were bummed that the Cardinals didn't pull off the win, but at least it was a great game!

I need to let everyone know something about Paige..........

Paige is not only the most beautiful and kindest woman I know, but she is also THE best mother. She seems to know exactly what to do and is already a professional mother. I'm so thankful that she is my wife and even more thankful that she is the mother of my child. I love you sweetie!!! Keep blogging because I love it.

p.s. The answer is yes... this post was partially done because Paige got Caroline to drop her last feeding and sleep from 8pm-7am

5 months old!

Caroline is 5 months old today! I know I say this every month, but SERIOUSLY! It's going by so fast. She's turning into such a big girl right before our eyes.

Caroline at 5 months:
-No official check up this month, but we did go see Dr. G this week to have her eczema looked at again (it's really been bothering her) and she weighed 16 lbs. 7 oz....OMG! This was with her clothes on, so I am not sure how much that skewed it, BUT that is still 2 pounds more than she weighed a month ago!?!?! 2 pounds?!?!?! Geez...

-She is still nursing every three hours during the day. Which seems to be doing the trick. We'll probably start cereal sometime in the next month, which I am sure will lend itself to lots of funny stories and pictures. At night, we are in the process of dropping her 10:00pm feeding. So far, so good! She eats about 10 oz. at 7:00 pm, goes to bed around 8:00 pm, and sleeps all the way until 7:00am!!!!

-She rolls in both directions (tummy to back and back to tummy). This is definitely her favorite thing to do! However, it seems that since she figured out how to get from her back to her tummy, she "forgot" how to roll from her tummy to her back. She still can (and will), but not without a bit of fussing.

-She is a side sleeper all the way. Has been for a while now. Every once in a while she rolls onto her tummy while she's sleeping, but she doesn't seem to want to stay that way.

-She tosses and turns like crazy at night! I find in her all kinds of crazy positions and locations in her crib. This isn't new, but it has definitely gotten worse since she can now roll. She gets her arms and legs caught between slats. I debated about what to do...put the bumpers back on? leave them off and keep rescuing her through out the night? I opted for the mesh bumper solution. Now, she won't suffocate, but she also won't get stuck. I highly recommend them!

-She is working really hard on sitting by herself. She has mastered the boppy-assisted sitting pretty well. She'll play like that for quite a while, until she reaches to far for a toy and tumbles over...ouch. If I sit her up by herself, she can sit unsupported for up to 15-20 seconds....sometimes. Definitely not consistent, so the SLP in me would label this skill as "emerging." :)

-She is still obsessed with her Daddy. I feed her, change her, and care for her all day. But as soon as he walks in the door, I am old news. She will just stare at him and smile. I will try to sing to her or get her attention with toys, but no. She's done with me. I love that she is a Daddy's girl already!! He is in for it when she's a teenager...

-Favorite toy right now is a remote. We have a cute little toy TV remote (Thanks Aunt Diane!) and she LOVES it! She also loves the real TV remotes and the occasional Blackberry. Is she her Daddy's daughter or what?!?!

-Her hair is what I like to call "in transition." Not sure what we are transitioning to, but it's a mess! On top, she still has the hair she was born with, and it's getting long! Around the sides and back, the original hair has fallen out and blonde fuzz has replaced it. This gives the illusion of a toupee and/or a comb over on top. It's pretty rockin'!

-No official teeth yet, but there's a lot of puffiness and whiteness on the bottom. I feel like she's been a little fussier lately, so maybe it's working its way out. She loves her teething rings and especially her teething ball (thanks Andrew and Mel!). I have also been putting her pacis in the fridge and she really likes that, too.

You now know more about Caroline than you probably ever wanted to know :) But I love having this to look back at see how much she's changed!

We're so "Austin"

We took Caroline for a hike on Sunday afternoon. It seemed like a very "Austin" thing to do :) The weather was quite pleasant and we had a great time! We may or may not have gotten lost on our way back. I would say we did, Jon would say we just"took a wrong turn." Either way, he navigated us back safely...thank goodness. I have a terrible sens of direction...and I mean TERRIBLE. Without Jon, Caroline and I would have been spending the night "Survivor style." :)

C loved her little backpack...Here she is ready to go!
**Yes, she is wearing a bow...Even when hiking, a girl must have the proper accessories :)

The best seat in the house!

She was mesmerized as she peeked over the side to watch the ground.

So mesmerized, in fact, that she conked out about halfway through.
Even mommy enjoyed the hike!
C loves being outside!

Fun with Mimi and Papa Al

My mom and Alan came to visit us this weekend and we had lots of fun!

Caroline LOVES her bath time...
Smiling pretty for Mimi...
Carolilne is "riding" Luci...This was obviously Daddy's idea, but thankfully Luci is a good sport:)
It's been so beautiful outside (in the upper 70's in January?!?! Crazy, but I love it) So we spent some time hanging out in the front yard.
We are still struggling with cradle cap and eczema, so we slather her up with Aquaphor as much as possible. Mimi got a bit over zealous with the slathering, and we decided to have little fun :)

Caroline's first visit to Outback...It's one of my fam's favorite restaurants, so it was high time Miss C experience it herself. I am pretty sure she loves it already :) See? She was even checking out the menu.

Thanks Mimi and Papa Al for coming to visit...we miss you already!

A visit with the ENT...

Today was Caroline's ENT appointment! A little back story...At our very first appointment with our pediatrician, when Caroline was a few days old, he noticed that she was "tongue-tied." This means that her frenulum(the piece of skin under the tongue that attaches it to the bottom of your mouth) is too tight. It can cause limited mobility of the tongue and lead to difficulty nursing, speech problems, etc. It is corrected by snipping that piece of skin; a procedure that is typically done there in the office. They determined that hers was very mild, and that we should wait to see how things progressed. She hasn't ever had any trouble nursing, and at subsequent dr. visits, he has said he thinks it is stretching out on it's own, and that it looks fine.
Well, as a Speech Pathologist, of course, I needed a second opinion just to be sure. Hence, the visit to the ENT :) The ENT took a looksy and also recommended that we wait and see. Again, since she hasn't had trouble nursing, chances are it isn't severe enough to cause any further problems as speech develops (my main concern). Plus, at this point she is too old to do the procedure in the office. So, if we did decide to have it corrected, it would mean an OR and anesthesia...NO THANKS!!!!! That would be way too traumatic for all of us, especially since we aren't having any problems! Hopefully, it will continue to stretch on it's own and we'll never have to worry about it again :)

My mom and step dad came to visit us this weekend and we had a fabulous time. I'll post more on that tomorrow!

Little Mermaid

This is how we found Caroline this morning...
She somehow managed to kick and thrash around enough last night to get both feet into one leg of her PJ's. Too funny!
Other exciting news...
Caroline is rolling from her back to her tummy now! Yea! She has been rolling from her tummy to her back for a couple of months, but yesterday was the first time she rolled from her back to her tummy all by herself. Needless to say, I am pretty excited. It's so much fun when they learn something new...It has quickly become one of her favortie activities. Here's a little video of her rockin' and rollin'...
**My apologies for my super annoying high pitched voice:) I never post videos on here for that very reason...I HATE listening to my own voice! So nerdy...

Playin' with the Paci

My multi-talented daughter has learned yet another exciting new trick...Taking her paci out of her mouth and then putting it back in. She will do this over and over, and finds it endlessly entertaining! Sometimes she can't get it quite right, so she just chews on it instead. Other times, she just sucks on it upside down. It's really funny to watch!
Here she goes...
Out it comes!
Now the hard part...
Which way does this thing go?

Another new trick...
She has never paid much attention to the bows I obsessively put in her hair....until today! Moments after this pic was taken, she ripped the bow right off of her head! I mean, she looks happy, right? bow and all? I hope this does not become a habit...First of all, I love putting bows in her hair. Second of all, when she pulled it out, she also pulled out a big chunk of hair. Ouch!
Maybe she just accidentally grabbed it...or maybe she was finally saying "ENOUGH with all these bows, Mom!" Either way, I'll keep you posted, as I am sure you will all be losing sleep over my bow dilemma ;)

Muscle Beach

New Year's Resolutions...I have them every year, but they never seem to pan out. They almost always include some plan to eat healthier and exercise more. This year is no different...This year's resolution comes in the form of a new workout plan we like to call....Muscle Beach.
Muscle Beach originated when we lived in Dallas. Jon and Andrew (Jon's buddy and our neighbor) used to lift weights in Andrew's garage. They dubbed it Muscle Beach (not sure why...probably because they are just that cool), and the name stuck. Over time, Muscle Beach became more than just a noun, it is a verb as well. For example, They used to say "Are we Muscle Beaching it tomorrow?" or "I am Muscle Beaching." etc...
Our weight bench is also in the garage (along with everything else we own, but that's another post in itself) so Muscle Beach lives on. Every morning, Jon and I do our Muscle Beach work out (push ups, crunches, lunges, squats, and a variety of hand weight exercises) followed by a walk around the neighborhood. So far, it's been really fun! I have been very sore, which just shows how out of shape I am :( We are only a week into our Muscle Beaching, but I figured I'd better post about it now...given my New Year's Resolution track record, I may not last much longer...

Caroline seems to get a kick out of watching her Mommy and Daddy exercising, and as you can imagine it's quite hilarious at times. I will not be posting any pictures of us working out, but I will leave you with a pic of Caroline all bundled up for our walk...

Hanging Out!

We are finally back in Austin. It's great to be home just plain relaxing, BUT we definitely miss our family and friends already!
Since we got back (Sunday afternoon), we have been doing lots of lounging. Caroline enjoys "hanging" out in her exersaucer...
and I do mean "hanging" literally, as her little toes just BARELY touch :)

She makes the most hilarious little squawking sounds while she spins around and plays with all the toys. She is definitely a big fan!
